Snow, hot chocolate, warm fires, candy and holiday celebrations make the winter time wonderful. If your children enjoy playing in the snow, or staying nice and toasty inside, your kids will love doing these activities with either you, or their nanny.

There are plenty of easy winter things to do that will create learning opportunities for your children. These are great things to try with a creative nanny!

Snow Storm in a Jar

Not only is creating snow in a jar fun, it is educational. This unique science experiment opens up a discussion about real snow storms. Where does snow come from? How does snow fall from the sky?

There are only a few materials needed to make it snow in a jar.

  • A jar or similar container
  • Baby oil
  • White paint
  • Hot water
  • Iridescent glitter
  • Alka Seltzer

Fill the jar 3/4 of the way with baby oil.  In a bowl mix hot water and white paint to make white water. Once mixed pour the white water into the jar and fill to the top. Add glitter to the top of the water, and let it settle to the bottom of the jar.

Once the water is settled it is time for the best part. The snow storm! This is the most exciting part for the kids, and the adults. Break the Alka Seltzer tablets into small pieces, and drop them into the jar and enjoy your snow storm!

Bake For the Neighbors

Baking is a classic holiday activity, and is so much fun to do. Cutting out cookie shapes and designing the cookies is a great activity for the kids.

Wrap up the baked goods in cute holiday paper, and make friends with your neighbors by sharing the results. Not only will your neighbors feel special, your kids will love personally delivering the goodies.

Baking is also educational. It teaches your children about measuring, ingredients, temperature and teamwork.

If you do not have time to go out somewhere, there are many fun winter activities you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home.

Snow Ball Photo Shoot

Get out there and play in the snow! Take plenty of pictures of you and the kids playing together. Playing in the snow is fun, and pictures are a great way to remember the fun.

Camp In Your Living room

Camping in your living room when it is cold outside is fun and warm. Add twinkle lights to your ceiling to create a starry sky. Light a fire in the fireplace and roast marshmallows. Share favorite stories around the “camp fire”, and appreciate the stillness of a traditional camping trip indoors.
